Chapter 11

The four of them were sitting at a corner table in the cafeteria with steaming cups of coffee on the table. Clayton had already called his buddy on the police force and straightened out the whole warrant situation. For once, using connections didn’t bother him one bit. His embarrassment over the speeding ticket had been surpassed by the fact that he managed to forget about it causing them to swear out a warrant. A warrant. How humiliating.

“Brandi, I have to know.” Edith finally asked sitting up in her chair with open curiosity. “Who taught you to punch like that?”

“I would like to know that as well.” Clayton agreed as he sat up in his chair too.

“Well.” Brandi mumbled with a small grin locking eyes with Jack who responded with the same small grin. “It’s kind of ironic actually.”

“Oh my..” Edith began with wide eyes.

“Quindell taught you, didn’t he?” Clayton finished a slow smile turning his lips.

“Actually, he taught all three of us.” Jack inserted his own grin widening. “Rocky over here, me, and Dalton.”

“And the best story you could tell me was the first day of school story?” Clayton asked with a lifted brow.

“Most sentimental.” Brandi reminded him. “You wanted funny?”

“How about the fact that Quindell made us swing at him then taunted us when we missed. Guess who was the first to make contact?” Jack inserted with a twinkle in his eyes.

“I can believe it.” Clayton said with a low laugh as he reached out to take Brandi’s hand in his and then was reminded that both of their fingers were bare. It dampened his mood considerably. “I kind of got a perverse pleasure out of you punching him. How could he tell your dad all of those lies without knowing the facts?”

“I’m not sure that Quindell was the one who told Pop’s about it. I am sure that Quindell did the digging but not the running of the mouth.” Jack suggested with a frown. “Nate’s always the one who decides these things and we all usually fall in line. I kind of broke from that when I refused to shut Brandi out.”

“Nate is just like daddy; he wants to control everything and really believes what he does is for the family.” Brandi said with a frown.

“What it sounds like to me is that your oldest brother is more frightened than he is anything else.” Edith suggested her hand covering Jack’s without thinking.

“Frightened? Nate?” Jack cried in shock. “Nate’s not afraid of anything.”

“Are you sure about that?” Clayton argued softly picking up on what Edith was suggesting. “He was ten when his entire world turned upside down and he was suddenly responsible for all of you. When was he ever a child? All he had was his family and when Brandi left, that family was fractured. Loneliness and fear can make even good people do strange things.”

“I never thought about it from his point of view.” Brandi whispered tears stinging her eyes. “I am not going to back down though Chevy boy, I can’t do that again.
